Overwhelmingly, shootings are caused by white Christian men. 80% of Trump supporters were either Evangelicals or Catholics who view him as a Strong Man. We have to ask what is religion's role in divisiveness? How does American culture glorify violence? Elections are up this fall for City Council, not a single representative will even mentin gun control. Even the most liberal who demand a Safety Council instead of police won't whisper gun control.
Okay MJ . I will bite. This has been a dark weekend in Minnesota with the tragic deaths of two people (& their dog) and the awful attack on two others. All of it incredibly sad due to the actions enacted by an individual ( presumed to have acted alone) with whatever their flavor of derangement is. But you want to push a gun control narrative. Okay. Well the state has 471.633 which preempts cities, townships, and so on from passing their own gun control regulations that are different than the state. Sooooo what possible motivation would CITY council members/candidates have to bring up pushing gun control ( beyond scoring points with those who favor over regulation and government over reach ) ?
In this wonderfully written article- this line stood out to me “If we want a less violent world, we need more fathers who understand that anger and violence are failures, not tools to gain power”. Because violence is a failure. It is the often simple and easy but stupid way out.
With tensions so high it is important to not assess blame on either side at this point, especially prior to accurate information. We do not need more riots. Maga did not create Maga on it's own, many felt pushed into it by an extreme left that often times feel it is ok to do wrong themselves because they are right, end of discussion.
We do need our fathers and we need them to feel valued as well. We need to regain the skills of listening and understanding. The current policies of all or none needs to change for both parties otherwise we will remain as we are.
I hope AI figures out how to mend this deeply troubled nation and world, because we seem incapable of it. More good writing above, but this resonated: ". . . we believe the sheer volume of firearms in America—and their easy accessibility—presents a problem with few clear answers. When that reality is combined with a severely underfunded mental health care system, an undercurrent of religious fanaticism, an avaricious tyrant in the White House, and a media ecosystem that rewards the most divisive voices, we should expect more attempts to undermine democracy through violence against elected officials." If it were up to me, I'd start with the guns.
We were at the DFL dinner on Friday with Melissa Hortman and so many other great Dems. Our energy was bolstered and our hope renewed by the speakers, especially Gov. Walz and Gov. Pritzker. And then we woke up.
