I live in the condos which are attached to the Midtown Global Market campus and this hotel. None of us were informed about this proposal from Jay Patel, CM Chavez or the Midtown Phillips Neighborhood Association. A majority of people who live here and own businesses still do not know about it.
When we bought here 18 years ago the Sheraton Hotel was one of the amenities that drew us to invest here in Midtown.
We had to defend and secure our campus in Spring/Summer of 2020 from the riots and attacks that targeted the MGM that destroyed all our surrounding buildings, the makeshift homeless shelter that was overrun by drug dealers, gangs and hundreds of addicts and visitors who completely destroyed the former Sheraton hotel. A couple weeks later they were evicted and spilled out onto the Midtown Greenway and formed a 120 tent encampment that lasted for 7 months that made life a living hell for everyone.
Now we’re supposed to blindly trust that owner Jay Patel, County Commissioner Angela Conley and CM Jason Chavez to make a decision without ANY community engagement to make another major decision that directly impacts our campus?
Are city planners and Sobriety Inc (whoever/whatever they are) aware that those trying to maintain sobriety have access to all their vices and triggers right outside their doorways?
Zero community involvement, zero transparency.
What will a facility like this do to property values at the Midtown Exchange campus?
I’m weary and have little faith in this proposal, especially since it’s being forced on us in the dark of night with no information.
I'm sorry but I am very suspicious of this applicant. No track record. Have they been vetted? Can they be trusted? Are they just planning to warehouse addicts indefinitely and collect government dollars while the clients are "trying to get clean". What is their program? Tell them to come back when they can prove they are effective at treating addicts and leading them into recovery.
Thanks for sussing this out Terry. Again. This is magical thinking, at best, and more likely a cynical plot to money. Question. If cuts to Medicaid are going to close small rural hospitals, won't they also have an impact on a "sobriety facility' like this?
It sounds like aftercare treatment facilities are going the same direction as senior living, too expensive for all but the rich despite being seriously understaffed by quality employees. Our senior care staff is severely under paid and continually short staffed but somehow we are going to have enough properly trained staff for more care facilities.
Hopefully the big beautiful bill along with the new MN oversight committee will have more oversight into the funds pouring into these facilities. If so it is possible the current unnamed owners will dissappear as quickly as they appeared.
It's not rocket science, they can at least have the same requirements as an application for a liquor license. All sizeable owners and officers must provide identification, fingerprints and criminal history. If the information is not provided there is no conversation let alone permits to build or run.
Hopefully, all members of the City Council have read THIS piece and the one below. To make sure, I am forwarding them both to all 13 CMs and our City staff.
Better yet, the community finds a way to slow the roll on this, and pretty much everything else of importance, UNTIL January, when a new, much improved City Council is sworn in.
Another corporate sell-out to scammers. I smell kickbacks. Why doesn’t the city council work with Fairview or another highly reputable recovery facility with decades of experience and track records instead of new-in-town snake oil salesmen? Because that would require actual work instead of just throwing more of our money at the problem and washing their hands of it. Minneapolis is basically the world capitol of recovery - we have the oldest AA club in the world and Fairview was formerly St. Mary’s who were major pioneers in medical recovery. Why do you think people flock to Hazalden from all over the world? But most importantly - WHY DO WE NEVER HAVE A SAY IN HOW THEY SPEND MILLIONS AND MILLIONS OF OUR TAX DOLLARS?!?! They seem to spend half their time committing us to pricey corporate contracts with penalties attached and the other half dreaming up new ways to suck money out of us. Minneapolis will never survive what’s coming from the right-wing fascists if we don’t get these left-wing fascists out of office. They’ve made “Progressive” a four-letter word. They, like all spoiled children, need about a 20-year time out. And get out of my yard!😁
It is shameful that once again this city council does not do their homework. They want to sound helpful and caring but they overlook the impact on this neighborhood and its people . It's great to care and want to help but their ignorance shows when they do not know all of the facts. For profit means forgotten care.
I might need to read this again. But is it supposed to be inpatient treatment, or residential treatment, or out patient treatment, a flop house for people who say they want to recover, a wet housing for homeless, or something else? Thanks .

Another great article from Terry White. He has the "flavor" of our neighborhood soo correct, unlike our tone-deaf CM Chavez.

They say people can come and go as they please, but they also say stays are expected to be 30 to 90 days. It’s my understanding it is residential.
IMO the people attempting to put this together have no idea what they're doing. And that's putting it gently.
30 day treatment is way too short for most people, 90 days to a year would be better for aftercare
