With the news of a DSA council member going out this week on a mental health leave, my FIRST thought was, how much of a negative impact that this anti/ defund/ abolish police DSA voting block has had on an entire class of city workers in public safety, by creating this VERY hostile work environment, AND mental health issues for these employees. How to change that, to get more " boots on the ground," through RETENTION and recruitment, is by having less of these types on the city council.
Hopefully, this individual gets the help they need, and as a result, realizes that they may not be advancing the health and the wellbeing of an entire city by their tenure on the city council
* In the meantime, the 26 neighborhoods in the 3rd Precinct are still without a fully functioning police station, WITHIN those neighborhoods, and over 6 years later. The effect....more crime and insecurity and mental health issues for those residents, workers, and businesses.
Maybe we should be caring about that.
Signed, a retired probation officer in juvenile ( residential, supervision and then investigations) someone who HAS LOVE AND CONCERN in their heart, and who does not believe it is good, for ANYONE, for these kids to be out there, doing all that they are being ALLOWED to do.
Policing is not just about responding to 911 calls. For most people, seeing a police officer in your neighbor doing routine patrolling is a comforting sight. You know that an appropriate level of public safety is being demonstrated. Let's do Payne's thought experiment in his Ward for a year to see how his constituents respond before we inflict it on the whole city.
Amen! I want to see 731 officers plus other solutions. I am all for public safety non-gun-carrying officers for things like traffic accidents and other non-violent incidents. I am good with behavioral crisis staff. But that would be to augment the 731. We need more boots on the ground with and without guns.
I agree w your first line. But I am uncomfortable asking MPD not to carry a gun. I think by virtue of wearing the uniform, they can be a target to some people. I just don't want to put them in a position that puts them at a disadvantage. At any time, traffic accidents and other non violent incidents can go bad. I have seen more than one posting on CrimeWatch Mpls where BCR escalates the call asking for MPD. Then we are sending out double coverage, also.
Good point. I was naively thinking we could more easily recruit boots on the ground (and save money) if the department were augmented with staff who were not sworn peace officers.
Miami, in days of Miami Vice, solved the problem with police presence. I lived there. They had more police cars than police on duty …. The cars were parked in highly visible place. They were taken home at nighte
