One doesn't need an accounting degree to understand that the city has no budget, they plan to spend. Taking into consideration that there were at least 5000 new dwelling units added to the city tax roll in the past two years (which includes high rises and single family homes),and that there are no new single family homes under $700K, how is it possible that there is a shortfall? New construction pays about $8000-$9000 in permit and inspection fees for SF, commercial much more. Commercial real estate is taxed 4% whereas primary residential is taxed about 1.4% in taxes. What was the cost of having bicycle lanes created and the thousands of posts installed? Who asked us? Who do politicians report to? This isn't Kindergarten where it's ok to color outside the lines. A public forum on taxation would be chaos, but the the city is driving away homeowners and investors. We have a severe office vacancy problem, we need to repurpose buildings, invigorate downtown, and we need parking. Why don't we have a public forum to discuss budget and tax hike? Can't we as residents who pay taxes have a say in how our dollars are mishandled? Have you ever seen a city project with only one worker? There are usually 3-4 guys standing around watching. Overtime?

It will be nice to see some exposure to some of the city's wasteful spending. I have seen a bit of it up close and know the amounts can be astounding. Clearly the city leaders want what they want when they want it and either have know idea of how work within a budget or do not care. I think there are also some blurry lines over what they actually have the right to spend on. 20 some years ago I saw the city spend millions taking the properties on the 2800 blocks between Aldrich and Dupont from its owners through forced sale. This was followed by spending more millions to clean up the properties after which they were sold to 3 developers for the high price of $300,000 each. Believe it or not I have made peace with the project but it is clear that the city is still following the same development model with the roof project. Unfortunately instead of recognizing thier inability to stay within a budget and spend wisely our city leaders have created an atmosphere that has us fighting with each other instead of looking at them for improvement.
