The Appeal of Socialism – Podcast Edition

Election updates and reader reaction

This podcast is a follow-up to our newsletter, The Appeal of Socialism.

Election Updates

Since we didn’t have time to produce an audio edition of the newsletter on Sunday, we recorded one this morning instead. We’re finding that more people are listening to the podcast—often more than are reading the written version—so we’ll continue experimenting with the format.

In today’s episode, we discuss a few recent developments in the local election landscape:

  • Mariam DeMello has confirmed that she will continue her campaign for the Ward 11 City Council seat. After losing the DFL endorsement to Jamison Whiting, there was speculation she might withdraw. However, in a recent press release, she announced plans to file and relaunch her campaign.

  • Billy Menz has ended his campaign for Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) Commissioner in District 1. Unless another candidate files, the DFL-endorsed Dan Engelhart will run unopposed.

The candidate filing period for Minneapolis municipal races runs from July 29 to August 12. After that, we’ll have a complete picture of who’s officially in—and who isn’t.

Experimentation

In addition to interviews, we will start including a review of reader comments in the podcast. We’ve appreciated the thoughtful conversations sparked by the newsletter, and we think others will too. Starting with future episodes, we’ll highlight a few notable comments when we record a podcast tied to a newsletter.

We’re fortunate to have an engaged, insightful, and well-informed audience. Reader feedback often surfaces ideas and angles we hadn’t considered, and we’d like to share more of that thinking with the broader community.
